So sweet, it makes my teeth hurt

by Sarah on April 6, 2009

This week I’ve decided to dedicate I Misunderstand! to pursuing the art of invitation miscommunication.

I never thought I’d ever create anything this sugary sweet-looking willingly and for free.

Sarcastic, yes. Sugary, no. I continue to surprise myself, all in the name of academics.

The dot pattern was inspired by a J.Crew dress I bought last year. The script typeface is called Giddyup, and it uses a little star to dot each “i” (I added one to the exclamation point; it seemed fitting). So, naturally, it seemed like the perfect cutesy typeface to underscore the sweet color scheme.

There’s probably someone out there who’ll love the design. But me? I just about gag. And then I laugh at myself.

On the other hand, Gilda and William sure are cute, if I do say so myself.

Gilda and William, sittin’ in a tree… K-I-S-S-I-N-G!

No?!

Well, okay then.

Sarah my dear, even when you try to design something that is fundamentally based around a color scheme that combines putrid Easter mint colors and a snazzy retro dot pattern roped up with a rodeo font, you still manage to pull it off at first glance. Is this a hidden talent of yours?

No?!

It’s a glaringly obvious talent, actually.

I love that I know you could pick this STD card apart (as easily as you could dissect the entire concept and use of STD cards)… but that you didn’t take the design so far as to, say, make it look like I tossed it together.

You do, after all, have your limits.

And the rather not-completely dragged through the mud design does put a greater emphasis on the writing, which as usual is splendid, clever and engaging.

I *am* excited.

About the Knickerbocker-Alberding wedding, of course…

And I look forward to this season’s batch of wedding invitations, if for no other reason than knowing we’ll get to spend at least 30 minutes on each one, picking it apart.

(May there be NO MINT GREEN + PINK in 2009!)

There is, after all, only so much two girls can take! ;)

ps — I’m highly amused that my verification word is “sukka.” As in, “Nice save the date, sukka!” :)

*giggle*
